This is the second part of a five part series featuring my favorite free fonts for design. This compilation will focus on ten very useful serif fonts. These fonts are perfect for print copy and large headings. Check them out!
I find it so important as a designer to have an awesome library of fonts at your fingertips. Choosing the correct one can make or break a design. The resources are out there to find some great free fonts, but sometimes the search can be a bit overwhelming. I’ve decided to put together a series of posts that feature my 10 favorite fonts in 5 different major categories.
I found all these fonts at my favorite free font site - Font Squirrel. The best part is they are available for commercial use! So what did you think of this list? What are your favorite free sans serif fonts?

M+ Outline These fonts are free software. Unlimited permission is granted to use, copy, and distribute it, with or without modification, either commercially and noncommercially. Designed by Morishita Coji. The fonts are regulary updated, work in progress. Caution: Japanese language.
GeoBats & Further Dingbat Fonts “Personally, I love dingbats because (most of the time) I convert them to vectors in Illustrator and use them as very large elements in some cases. All you have to do is use the font in Illustrator and then go to Type > Create Outlines, and Bam. You got yourself a vector to work with. Here are some dingbat fonts that I thought you might enjoy.” You might find even more dingbat fonts here. The screenshot below features GeoBats.
FF Unit Rounded Bold While it is soft, FF Unit Rounded isn’t a sausage face or one suited only for comic strips. It looks friendly without losing its precision. You can use the Bold OpenType font for free. Designed by Erik Spiekermann. You need to be registered to download the font.
IPAP Fonts Family The Japanese Information-technology Promotion Agency offers 5 fonts for free download; among them — IPAP Gothic and IAP Mincho presented below. Caution: Japanese language. You’ll need to accepts requirements to download the font.

GrauBlau Graublau Sans Web regular and bold were designed by Georg Seifert. The fonts are optimized for screen use and support a wide range of character encodings, for example ISO 8859-15 (Western), ISO 8859-2 (Central European), ISO 8859-3 (Turkish, Maltese and Esperanto), ISO 8859-4 (Baltic), ISO 8859-5 (Cyrillic), ISO 8859-7 (Greek) and ISO 8859-10 (Scandinavian). According to the license, you may not use the font to create commercial print artwork, but you may use the fonts in any PDF documents and on an unlimited number of websites using the font-face-attribute. Ingofonts Ingofonts offers all fonts for free. However, typefaces which are offered to download contain only a reduced font. That means, the font only consists of uppercase and lowercase from A to Z or rather, a to z. Below you see Absolut Pro, Wendelin and Josef Pro, two of the typefaces offered for free download. Nevis This strong, angular typeface is ideal for headings. It features 96 of the most commonly used glyphs (characters).
Countries of Europe This typeface includes not only of the alphabet A-Z and a-z, but also 39 silhouettes of European countries. When you start type the first letters of the country, the silhouette appears — e.g. if you tipe »ir«, the map of Ireland appears. Freeware by Ingofonts. Not reduced.
Freebooter Script This script type literally impresses with its curves. Freebooter Script can be used for packaging design or some projects in old-style. Designed by Graham Meade, available in PC Type 1, PC True Type and Mac Type 1. Designed by Graham Meada.
Cora Basic Regular (OpenType) A solid and strong sans-serif typeface designed by Veronika Burian and José Scaglione is available for free for non-commercial purposes. Among other things, Cora Basic Regular includes numerous punctuation marks, ligatures, old-style numeras and math symbols. After you’ve completed the form, a free non-commercial licence of Cora Basic regular will be sent to you by email. Free for a limited time. (thanks, C. Apalodimas)
Walkway (TrueType) Walkway is a large font family which consists of 31 font style, such as Rounded, SemiBold Reverse Oblique, Bold, Bold Reverse Oblique, Black, Black Reverse Oblique, UltraBold and further styles. The typeface looks elegant and modest and can be used best for headlines. Windows, Mac OS X, Linux.
Karabine Fancy “hand-drawing” typeface by Jonathan Paquette. A quite distinctive typeface in which capital letters are the reflection of “normal” letters. PC / Mac. Free for personal use only.

Aller Sans [ Specimen | License | Download ] Dalton Maag design team designed a beautiful sans-serif Aller Sans, sponsored by Danish publishing company Aller (hence the name). The typeface was designed as part of the Danish School of Media and Journalisms new CI and is now available for free use and download (via).
Mayberry Pro SemiBold (registration is required) AscenderFonts released the font Mayberry Pro Semi Bold available for free download. This font belongs to the Mayberry Pro family. This family is a humanist sans serif designed by Steve Matteson to provide optimal legibility on screen in applications ranging from User Interfaces to web pages. The registration is required to download the font.
Rally Character Set [ Specimen | Previews | Download ] Lukyan Turetsky released a character set of rally symbols. The font contains standard signs of control in rally, infographics rally icons, blanks for the design of logos and other graphics, symbols for signs legends (transcript) and other symbols and marks. OpenType, available for free download.
Quicksand Quicksand is a brilliant sans-serif font designed by Andrew Paglinawan and available for free download.
Agrafa Hairline (registration is required) “Agrafa is a technical but versatile display face that works well in both large and small sizes. Most of the glyphs are made from one continuous line and shows the constraints of bending a paperclip/wire.” Designed by Mugur Mihai. [ via ]
Conglomerfont Conglomerfont is a free font created by Jay Hilgert (BittBox) and the design community from all over the world. Jay asked people to send individual letters to his inbox, and I coagulated the submissions into a single font, hence the name, Conglomerfont.
Sketch Rockwell A sketchy hand-drawn script font, designed by Lukas Bischoff, available for free download for PC and Mac OS X. Free for personal use only.
Megalopolis Extra [ Specimen | EULA License ] Revamped version of the 2004 one. Now in OT with extended language support and OpenType features with alternates, ligatures, different styles of figures, etc. You can use it freely for all your personal and commercial work. [ via ]
Sansation A modern sans-serif, designed by Bernd Montag and available for free download and usage. PC / Mac OS X.
Exljbris fonts update Jos Buivenga has recently updated his free fonts, partly available for free download. The improved Fertigo Pro, Anivers, Museo and Museo Sans have been recently re-released and are now available for free download.
Birra Stout (registration is required) Birra arose from years of compulsive doodling in pen and ink, and conjures the whimsy and syncopated contrast of novelty handlettering in the early 20th century. Birra Stout is a free font, made available by Darden Studio.
Miso [ Preview ] MISO is an architectural lettering font completed in 2006 by Mårten Nettelbladt. It’s available in three weights (light, regular, bold) in TrueType format for Windows.
Advent Andreas K. improved his typeface and made a new version availabe for free personal, non-commercial usage only.

High Heels Typeface This was a fun project overall because I got the chance to explore a diverse and massive collection of High-heeled shoes, which was the main inspiration for the typeface that I have created. Not available for download.
